Utah sees low divorce rate

As anyone who is married knows, a marriage can be hard work. People don't always see eye-to-eye on all issues which can lead to conflict. Other issues, like infidelity, unemployment, the addition of children, health issues and other pressures can also contribute to marital discord. When people are no longer happy in their marriages, they have the option to divorce.

According to new data, couples in Utah seem to be turning to divorce less often than in the past. In fact, Utah ranks as one of the lowest states in the U.S. for its divorce rate. Specifically, Utah was named as the number four state in the nation for its low divorce rate. Data showed that in 2013 only 9.2 percent of the people in Utah were divorced. In the study, Utah was only higher on the list than New Jersey, New York and North Dakota.

While this data may be surprising to some, divorce rates throughout the United States have actually been falling in recent decades. Data has shown that the divorce rate seems to have peaked in the 1970's and 1980's at around 40 to 50 percent of marriages ending in divorce. Since this time, the number of divorces has been decreasing. Some say that the divorce rate may mean that only around 33 percent of all married couples turn to divorce.

When people do choose divorce, they need to be aware of the legal consequences. In Utah, a divorce is not as simples as just ending the relationship. It includes major decisions that can effect both people for years to come. Property division, child support and child custody issues, for example, need to be decided. With the right help, people can come to a consensus on these divorce legal issues and start a new life.
